EekTown Halloween
This event will look A LOT different than years past
The Emporia Main Street Board of Directors met this past Wednesday during our regularly scheduled board meeting (the first and third Wednesday’s of every month). One of the agenda items was discussion of Halloween activities. We will not host Haunted Tours this year, but there was a desire to obtain information from both community members and businesses concerning Trick or Treat related activities. Staff members obtained survey information from businesses, community members, and some “best practices” from organizations throughout the nation and presented the data to board members. In a close six for, four against decision, the board decided to move forward with a very different type of Trick or Treat

Here are the details on the decision:
-Emporia Main Street plans to promote a downtown Trick or Treat event on Saturday, October 31, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
-Masks are required for this event. We will have volunteers walking the area offering masks if we see people without masks during the Trick or Treat time frame. This is for kids. Let’s not make it more difficult than it has to be. To be clear, most kids are wearing masks to school to prevent any type of aerosol transmission, and these are they types of masks we are requiring. A general costume mask will not suffice. If you make plans to attend, please utilize the proper masks.
-We will draw directional arrows on the sidewalk to encourage one way traffic flow on sidewalk areas. One directional flow should encourage solid movement in a uniform manner.
-Normally, we would encourage businesses to pull people into their storefronts to distribute candy, but not this year. Candy distribution should be outside only.
-Candy tubes will be used to distribute candy to kids from individual businesses or organizations. Children will not be reaching into candy bins, and business people will not physically hand candy to Trick or Treaters. Instead, children Trick or Treating will have candy slid through a cylinder into their plastic Jack O’ Lantern/candy bag/etc. Businesses- you are required to use a tube.
-Parents or guardians should encourage kids to wait until they get home to eat any candy acquired from the Trick or Treat. We want to make sure people stay masked up during the entire event.
-We encourage businesses to make hand sanitizer available for those that need it.
-The event will be designed to keep people moving. We don’t want people in static locations for a long period of time. Keep on the directional pathway and make your loop.
-All Emporia Main Street Businesses that wish to participate in Trick or Treat Activities must notify the Emporia Main Street office no later than Friday, October 23rd. During the notification conversation, we will detail expectations and safety procedures.

Some things that we want the general public to be aware of include:
-There are businesses that are hurting, there are businesses with folks that have lost friends or family to the pandemic, and there are folks that work in businesses that may have a higher risk of serious COVID consequences than the general population. Not all businesses will participate in this year’s Trick or Treat, and that is okay. With businesses distributing candy outside, it will be very clear who is participating and who isn’t. Please be respectful of businesses that are trying their best to work through a pandemic.
-Businesses are making an expenditure on candy simply to give kids some semblance of holiday fun in a safer environment. Please support those businesses with your purchases and advocacy throughout the holiday season.
-This type of leadership opportunity is designed to showcase some safer ways to engage in Halloween activities. We understand that people will Trick or Treat. It is our hope that by creating an outdoor event, with stringent safety protocols, we can encourage the emulation of those protocols in private settings. Setting high expectations within this type of event will hopefully create a safer holiday for others.
-We also want to recognize that different families have different thresholds for involvement. We don’t want any family to feel like they must participate in the event described. If you don’t want to follow the rules, stay home. If you don’t feel comfortable, stay home. If you or someone in your family feels ill MOST DEFINITELY stay home. This is meant to be a fun and safe activity that will obviously operate differently than previous iterations of the event.
There are risks and rewards with any sort of business or event activity these days. Our goal is to minimize risks while still providing the rewarding quality of life and business exposure critical to maintaining a sense of community. This event will not be as simple as Trick or Treat activities in the past, but if businesses and participants are willing to adhere to the more stringent guidelines, we can provide a fun and safer experience for local youth.
