National Historic Preservation Month
Citizens in Emporia, Kansas will join
thousands of individuals around the country as part of a
nationwide celebration of National Historic Preservation
Month, May 2008. “This
Place Matters"
is the theme of the month-long celebration, which is
sponsored annually by the National Trust for Historic
Preservation. During this month, area 5th grade
students will take a walking tour of historic downtown
Emporia. This has become an annual event, with 300+
children participating. It is a great way to teach the
important ties of the past to our future and to celebrate
the unique and irreplaceable heritage of Emporia.

Emporia Main Street, the Lyon County Historical Society and Emporia Arts Council encourage the citizens of the community to take a few moments during Preservation Month to appreciate the importance of our community’s history and spirit of place where we live, work and play. Emporia Main Street & The Lyon County Historical Society annually recognize an individual or organization who has excelled in preservation. We will announce this years’ recipient of the J.Warren Brinkman Memorial Preservation Award in early May. Farmer's Market is held
every year from May to October on Saturday mornings
beginning at 8:00am. Beginning June 13, the Farmer's
Market will also operate on Wednesday afternoons
at 5:00pm. The Farmer's Market is located at 7th &
Merchant, at the Merchant Street
parking lot downtown.
